Key Moments

  • NZD/USD trades around 0.5675, hovering just above its lowest level since early July
  • Expectations of another Fed rate hike and US-Iran tensions continue to support the US Dollar
  • Markets remain cautious ahead of a Trump-Xi meeting that could shape sentiment toward antipodean currencies

NZD/USD Stuck Near Recent Lows

The New Zealand Dollar remains under pressure against the US Dollar, with NZD/USD trading around the 0.5675 area and lingering just above the multi-month low reached the previous day. Market participants are reluctant to drive the pair meaningfully higher as they wait for the outcome of a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Any headlines from that engagement are expected to influence broader risk sentiment and demand for antipodean currencies, including the Kiwi.

US Dollar Support from Fed Expectations and Geopolitics

The US Dollar has paused after a strong advance that pushed it to its highest level since July 29, providing some near-term relief for NZD/USD. However, the broader backdrop continues to favor the greenback. Rising expectations that the US Federal Reserve will deliver another interest rate hike, combined with persistent geopolitical uncertainty, keep the USD underpinned and limit any rebound in the New Zealand Dollar.

Investors have increased wagers on further Fed tightening and now assign roughly a 70% probability that the US central bank will raise borrowing costs again in October. The shift followed a private survey on Wednesday indicating that US business activity expanded for a fourth consecutive month. The S&P Global flash Composite PMI Output Index climbed from 56.0 to 58.4 in September, its highest reading since July 2021. At the same time, an overnight jump in oil prices has reignited concerns about inflation, reinforcing expectations for additional Fed action.

US-Iran Tensions Add to Safe-Haven Demand

Geopolitical risks are also lending support to the US Dollar. Frictions between the United States and Iran intensified after President Trump delivered a new warning to Iran in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. In parallel, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged that a significant divide remains between the two sides but expressed willingness to pursue a diplomatic path to resolve the conflict. Despite that signal, the ongoing risk premium tied to the situation continues to favor the safe-haven USD and acts as a headwind for NZD/USD.

RBNZ Stance and Near-Term Outlook for the Kiwi

On the domestic front, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s dovish policy outlook remains a drag on the New Zealand Dollar. This stance encourages caution among traders who might otherwise look to position for a stronger recovery in NZD/USD. Against this backdrop of supportive US fundamentals, geopolitical uncertainty, and a comparatively softer RBNZ, the pair struggles to mount any convincing rebound from current levels.

Technical Picture: Bias Remains to the Downside

From a technical standpoint, NZD/USD retains a bearish near-term structure after breaking decisively below the 0.5700 level overnight. The move leaves the pair exposed to a further decline toward previous lows in the vicinity of 0.5625. On the upside, any attempt at a recovery is likely to encounter initial resistance near the 0.5700 area, which now acts as an important former support. A move back above that threshold could trigger short-covering and open the door for a test of the 0.5765 horizontal zone.
