Key Moments:

  • WTI trades near $85.50 per barrel in Asian hours after a prior session pullback, supported by escalating U.S.-Iran tensions.
  • UAE suspends all financial and economic dealings with Iran following alleged missile attacks, while Gulf exporters keep supplies flowing via alternative routes.
  • EIA reports a 4.4 million barrel increase in U.S. crude inventories, alongside a 1.5 million barrel drop in distillate stocks to a one-month low.

WTI Extends Rebound on Geopolitical Frictions

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures advance after recording modest declines in the prior session, with prices hovering around $85.50 per barrel during Asian trading on Thursday. The move higher comes as heightened geopolitical strains in the Middle East and stalled talks between the United States and Iran underpin the market.

The dispute has extended to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key transit route for global oil shipments. US President Donald Trump stated that flows of oil cargoes are continuing through the waterway, while also signaling that the possibility of renewed dialogue with Tehran remains open.

UAE Sanctions and Regional Supply Routes

Regional tensions intensified after the United Arab Emirates halted all financial and economic transactions with Iran in response to alleged ballistic missile strikes on Emirati territory. Despite these additional economic measures and rising geopolitical risk, crude exports from Gulf producers remain substantial as they lean on backup transport corridors and low-profile shipping arrangements to sustain deliveries.

Market Risk Elevated as Tensions Persist

Analysts at TD Securities describe the environment for crude oil as fragile against the backdrop of mounting geopolitical uncertainty. The firm cautions that “further ship attacks, increasing threats of escalation and stalled talks put the energy market at an elevated risk,” emphasizing that the potential for supply-side disruptions may keep a risk premium embedded in Brent and refined product benchmarks.

U.S. Inventory Picture: Crude Up, Distillates Down

Supply fundamentals in the United States present a mixed configuration. The most recent data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed domestic crude oil inventories rising by 4.4 million barrels over the past week. At the same time, distillate stocks declined by 1.5 million barrels, pushing those inventories to a one-month low.
