Key Moments

  • USD/JPY trades just below the mid-158.00s, down about 0.20% after touching a near three-week high the previous day.
  • Heightened speculation over potential Japanese intervention and renewed USD selling weigh on the pair.
  • US yields ease and political uncertainty around midterm elections keeps USD bulls cautious, even as Fed expectations stay hawkish.

Pair Retreats From Recent Highs

The USD/JPY pair moved lower during the Asian session on Wednesday, reversing part of a two-day advance that had lifted it to a near three-week high the previous day. The cross came under pressure as a mix of fundamental drivers encouraged selling interest. At the time described, spot prices were trading just under the mid-158.00s, down roughly 0.20% on the day, with market participants preparing for potential volatility around US midterm election outcomes.

Intervention Risk Keeps Yen Shorts on Edge

Traders remained wary of renewed action by Japanese authorities to stabilize the Japanese Yen (JPY), curbing appetite for fresh short positions in the currency. This caution, combined with broad US Dollar (USD) softness, contributed to the downward drift in USD/JPY. Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said on Monday that the joint FX statement with the US persists and that the government is prepared to act to curb excessive or disorderly weakness in the JPY.

Geopolitical Optimism Pressures the Dollar

Sentiment that a diplomatic path could ease the US-Iran war further undermined demand for the safe-haven Greenback, adding to the offered tone in USD/JPY. In that context, President Donald Trump told the Financial Times on Tuesday that the US has no immediate plans to strike Iran and
“we seem to be getting everything we want,”
which led traders to scale back the geopolitical risk premium and weighed on the USD.

US Yields Ease as Election Results Trickle In

US government bond yields slipped as investors tracked early midterm election developments. Markets monitored the possibility that Republicans could lose their majority in the House of Representatives and potentially in the Senate as well. The move in yields kept USD buyers on the defensive. However, expectations for a hawkish Federal Reserve limited the downside, as stronger US labor market data from Tuesday supported the case for additional policy tightening.

Labor Data and Inflation Risks Support Fed Outlook

The Labor Department’s monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) indicated that hiring remained relatively steady while job openings climbed more than anticipated in September, rising to 7.5 million from 7.2 million. At the same time, concerns over energy-driven inflation continued to reinforce expectations for further Fed rate hikes. Together, these factors argued for caution before positioning for a sustained downturn in the USD and, by extension, in the USD/JPY pair.

Rate Differentials Still Favor the Dollar

Despite the pullback in USD/JPY, the persistently wide interest rate gap between the US and Japan remained an important constraint on the lower-yielding JPY. This backdrop suggested that it may be prudent to wait for more decisive selling pressure to confirm that a near-term top in spot prices is in place. Looking ahead, traders were focused on the upcoming US ADP private-sector employment report and the ISM Services PMI later in the North American session for fresh directional cues.

Key Technical Levels for USD/JPY

From a technical standpoint, USD/JPY continued to trade underneath the 100-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) at 159.15 and the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement at 159.75. This configuration kept the short-term outlook capped and mildly bearish. The pair hovered just below the 50.0% retracement level at 158.45, highlighting this zone as an important resistance area that would need to be reclaimed to support a more durable recovery toward the upper Fibonacci band.

On the downside, initial support was seen at the 38.2% retracement at 157.16. Below that, deeper Fibonacci support levels appeared at 155.56 and close to the structural cycle low near 152.97, where demand could strengthen if renewed selling emerges.
