Key Moments

  • EUR/GBP is oscillating between 0.8320 and 0.8365, trading near 0.8347 and hovering just above 18-month lows.
  • Expectations for a 25 basis point Bank of England rate increase to 4% on Thursday are underpinning GBP strength.
  • Eurozone inflation data at three-year highs is adding pressure on the ECB, while technicals show fading bearish momentum but limited bullish conviction.

EUR/GBP Steadies Near Support as Pound Retains Edge

The Euro is trading virtually unchanged against the British Pound on Monday, with EUR/GBP holding modestly above the 0.8300 level but struggling to break through resistance near 0.8365. Both the EUR and GBP have strengthened sharply versus the US Dollar following the US midterm election results, yet the Pound remains comparatively better supported as markets look ahead to a possible Bank of England rate increase on Thursday.

In this context, EUR/GBP is confined to a tight 40-pip band just above 18-month lows, with the cross quoted around 0.8330 and downside attempts in the Pound showing limited follow-through.

Eurozone Inflation Data Keeps Pressure on ECB

Preliminary Eurozone figures released on Wednesday showed consumer inflation accelerating to its highest level in three years in October. This development is seen as adding further pressure on the European Central Bank to continue tightening monetary policy in the coming months.

These inflation readings have helped counterbalance the impact of a downward revision to October’s HCOB Services PMI data, which had been published earlier the same day.

Focus on BoE as UK Data Has Limited Impact on Sterling

In the United Kingdom, market attention is centered on the upcoming Bank of England policy announcement. The BoE is widely anticipated to raise its Bank Rate by 25 basis points to 4% on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the final UK S&P Global Services PMI has also been revised lower. However, this adjustment has had only a muted effect on the Pound, which remains underpinned by expectations of tighter monetary policy.

Technical Picture: EUR/GBP Trapped Between 0.8320 and 0.8365

EUR/GBP is quoted at 0.8347, roughly in the middle of its recent trading corridor bounded by 0.8320 on the downside and 0.8365 on the upside. On the 4-hour chart, momentum signals are tilting slightly positive: the 14-period Relative Strength Index is moving toward the neutral 50 mark, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is marginally in positive territory.

On the daily timeframe, the appearance of Doji candlesticks reflects indecision among market participants, underscoring the lack of a clear directional bias at current levels.

For buyers, a decisive move above the highs recorded on October 30 and November 2, located near 0.8365, would be needed to open the door to a more meaningful rebound toward the October 26 peak in the 0.8400 region. On the downside, the band between Tuesday’s low at 0.8330 and the late March 2025 trough at 0.8315 is expected to act as an initial defensive zone against renewed selling pressure. A break below that area would bring the February 2025 low around 0.8250 into focus as a potential next objective.
