Key Moments
- GBP/JPY rebounded to 208.00 after touching a fresh YTD low at 206.89 earlier in the session.
- Upward revisions to UK Q2 GDP and an unexpected narrowing of the Current Account deficit supported the Pound.
- Soft Japanese Retail Trade and Industrial Production readings weighed on the Yen, limiting its appeal.
GBP/JPY Rebounds After Hitting New Year-to-Date Low
The British Pound (GBP) advanced sharply against the Japanese Yen (JPY) in early London trading on Wednesday, recovering from losses seen during the Asian session. GBP/JPY was last quoted at 208.00, having risen from a new year-to-date low of 206.89 reached earlier in the day. The cross recouped most of its intraday decline as investors reacted to stronger-than-expected UK macroeconomic data and weaker figures out of Japan.
UK GDP Revision and Current Account Surprise Support Sterling
Fresh data releases from the United Kingdom provided a clear tailwind for the Pound. Final Gross Domestic Product (GDP) numbers showed that the economy expanded by 0.5% in the second quarter, compared with the previously estimated 0.4%. On an annual basis, the year-on-year GDP growth rate was revised higher to 1.4% from an initial 1.2% reading.
At the same time, the UK Current Account figures indicated an unexpected improvement. The deficit narrowed to GBP 19.932 billion in the second quarter, down from a downwardly revised GBP 21.12 billion in the first quarter. Markets had been looking for a deterioration to a GBP 25.6 billion shortfall, so the smaller deficit provided an additional boost to Sterling sentiment.
Japanese Data Undermines Yen Confidence
Japanese indicators released on Wednesday failed to offer any support to the Yen. Retail Trade declined 1.2% in August, reversing a 2.1% increase registered in July. Industrial Production also came in weaker than anticipated, with preliminary figures pointing to a 4.8% drop in August. This contrasted with market expectations for a 1.7% rise and followed a 0.5% gain in July, further denting confidence in the Japanese currency.
Technical Picture: Recovery Faces Key Resistance Near 208.30
From a technical standpoint, GBP/JPY has bounced to around 207.90, but the short-term outlook is still tilted to the downside. Price action remains below a previously established trendline support, which is now expected to serve as resistance. On the 4-hour charts, momentum signals remain subdued: the Relative Strength Index (14) is holding below 40 despite the recent rebound, and the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is marginally negative, indicating that the current recovery lacks strong conviction.
Buyers are confronting a notable resistance zone around 208.30, where the reclaimed trendline converges with the intraday high. A sustained move above this region would likely improve bullish confidence and bring the September 27 and 28 highs in the 209.00 area into focus. Beyond that, the peaks from September 22 and 24, situated near 210.15, are described as unlikely to be challenged in the near term.
On the downside, an important support level lies near 207.00. A break beneath that area would turn attention toward the 127.2% Fibonacci retracement of September’s advance, located around 206.00, which is highlighted as a realistic downside objective.

How to Read the Currency Heat Map
The heat map presents percentage changes of major currencies relative to each other. The base currency is taken from the left-hand column, while the quote currency is taken from the top row. For instance, selecting the British Pound from the left column and moving horizontally to the US Dollar column shows the percentage change for GBP (base)/USD (quote) in the corresponding cell.
