Key Moments

  • NZD/USD has faced selling pressure for three consecutive sessions and is trading near the mid-0.5600s, close to its late-June lows.
  • Stronger Federal Reserve rate hike expectations, higher US yields, and geopolitical tensions are supporting sustained US Dollar strength.
  • The Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s dovish stance has reinforced a more-than-one-month downtrend in NZD/USD, keeping the pair vulnerable.

New Zealand Dollar Struggles as Downtrend Extends

The NZD/USD pair continues to come under pressure for a third straight session, trading around the mid-0.5600s during the Asian session on Friday and hovering near its lowest level since late June. The spot rate remains on course for a fifth consecutive weekly decline, with the technical and fundamental backdrop still favoring the US Dollar (USD).

US Dollar Strength Backed by Fed Expectations and Higher Yields

The US Dollar Index (DXY) surged to an almost two-month high on Thursday, driven by rising expectations of additional Federal Reserve (Fed) tightening and a sharp move higher in US bond yields. Data from CME Group’s FedWatch Tool indicate that market participants are pricing in an over 65% probability that the Fed will raise interest rates again in October, following the widely anticipated 25 basis points hike earlier this month. These expectations have been reinforced by recent hawkish remarks from several Fed officials.

Inflation concerns linked to elevated oil prices are further supporting the case for continued Fed tightening, helping push the yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note to a new high since July 2007. At the same time, uncertainty surrounding the resolution of the US-Iran conflict is maintaining a geopolitical risk premium, which continues to favor the safe-haven Greenback. Together, these factors are consistent with a negative near-term outlook for NZD/USD.

Limited Support from Trade Developments, Dovish RBNZ Weighs

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News that the US-China trade truce would be extended until January 10. This announcement has not provided notable support to antipodean currencies, including the New Zealand Dollar, which remains pressured by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s (RBNZ) dovish policy outlook. That stance has underpinned an over one-month-long decline in NZD/USD.

Market participants are now looking ahead to upcoming US macroeconomic releases and additional Fed commentary later in the North American session for fresh direction.

Technical Outlook for NZD/USD

From a technical perspective, NZD/USD appears positioned to extend its downward move toward the year-to-date low near 0.5625, last reached in June. A decisive break below that level would likely be interpreted as a renewed bearish signal and could open the door to further downside.

On the upside, any recovery attempts are expected to encounter selling interest around the 0.5700 area. The next notable resistance is located just ahead of the mid-0.5700s; a clear move above that zone would be needed to suggest the potential for a more sustained rebound.
