Key Moments:

  • Gold stays pinned below $4,300 during the Asian session as the US Dollar consolidates after a strong advance.
  • Recent hawkish commentary from Fed officials and multi-year highs in US bond yields continue to pressure XAU/USD.
  • Technical backdrop remains negative, with key Fibonacci and moving average resistance levels capping the upside.

Gold Holds in Tight Range as Dollar Rally Pauses

Gold (XAU/USD) continues to trade sideways in the Asian session on Friday, hovering close to the weekly low set the previous day in what remains a broadly negative fundamental environment. The US Dollar has eased slightly after a robust move to a nearly two-month high, offering limited support to the precious metal. Even so, gold is still trading below $4,300, with sentiment constrained by the Federal Reserve’s hawkish stance, elevated US Treasury yields, and persistent geopolitical risks that favor the Greenback.

Fed Officials Signal Scope for Additional Tightening

Recent remarks from Federal Reserve policymakers underscore a willingness to maintain or extend restrictive policy. Following the September rate hike, officials have leaned toward the possibility of further tightening.

Fed Governor Michael Barr stated on Wednesday that rising inflation risks, combined with a solid economic backdrop, imply the US central bank is likely to raise rates again. Supporting this view, a private-sector survey indicated that US business activity this month climbed to its highest reading since July 2021, while input prices faced by firms jumped to almost a four-year high. In addition, New York Fed President John Williams commented on Thursday that another rate increase this year would be a “reasonable” expectation.

Fed Tone Remains Firmly Hawkish

John Williams’ latest communication reflected a strong hawkish inclination. The FXS Speechtracker assigned his comments a score of 7.2/10, above the 6.2/10 historical average, highlighting a more hawkish tone relative to the usual benchmark. His reference to the “remarkable resilience” of the US economy, diminishing downside risks to maximum employment, strong AI-related demand, and the suggestion that an additional rate hike by year-end is “reasonable” point to a Federal Reserve that remains focused on bringing inflation under control, even as it scales back explicit forward guidance.

The FXS Fed Sentiment Index edged down by 0.18 points to 148.63, signaling only a slight reduction in hawkish intensity despite the strong Speechtracker reading. With the index still well above the neutral 100 level, the Fed’s posture remains clearly hawkish, implying ongoing support for the US Dollar as investors evaluate how long higher yields can be sustained.

Rising Yields and Geopolitics Reinforce Dollar Strength

Inflation concerns linked to higher energy prices are adding to expectations that the Fed could tighten further. These concerns are tied to tensions in the Middle East and the prospect of a possible 90-day ban on US diesel exports. As a result, US government bond yields have surged to multi-year highs. The yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury is trading near levels last seen in July 2007. Such yield dynamics underpin the Greenback and typically limit demand for non-yielding assets such as gold.

At the same time, the unresolved nature of the US-Iran conflict underpins demand for the safe-haven Dollar. This uncertainty is seen as validating a constructive near-term outlook for the Greenback and argues for caution before positioning for any substantive rebound in bullion.

Escalating US-Iran Tensions Support Safe-Haven Dollar

Geopolitical developments continue to feed into risk sentiment. Trump said earlier this week that he had been considering extremely severe military action against Iran. Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that Tehran remains committed to its nuclear program and would not give in to US pressure, heightening doubts about the prospects for a peace agreement between the two nations.

Further stoking tensions, Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen launched missile and drone attacks on a sensitive site in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, as well as on Aramco facilities. These developments help sustain the geopolitical risk premium and suggest that the bias remains skewed toward further US Dollar appreciation, a backdrop that urges caution among XAU/USD bulls.
