Starbucks Expands Global Technology Footprint in India
US-based coffee chain Starbucks has entered into an agreement to create a global capability center (GCC) in Chennai, a major city in southern India. The Tamil Nadu state government said on Monday that the new facility is expected to add around 800 technology-focused jobs.
Starbucks currently operates about 500 cafes in India through its joint venture with Tata Consumer Products. The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment that was made outside regular business hours.
Chennai Strengthens Its Position as a Global Services Hub
The Starbucks plan follows closely on the heels of a similar move by US pharmacy chain Walgreens, which recently signed a pact with the Tamil Nadu government to set up its own GCC in the state capital. Chennai already hosts technology centers for several major global corporations, including Citi, Barclays and American Express.
Role of Global Capability Centers
Global capability centers have evolved from their traditional role as low-cost back-office units. They are increasingly being used by multinational groups to perform higher-value work that directly supports their headquarters. These activities include functions such as finance, software development, and research and development.
