Key Moments

  • Short-term holder whale unrealized gains reached a record $9.07 billion on September 4, the highest reading in data going back to 2016.
  • Unrealized profit for this cohort declined to $7.51 billion on Saturday but remains within the five largest readings, all logged over the past two weeks.
  • On-chain activity from Bitcoin holders with more than five years of holding history has increased, with their 90-day moving average of STXOs rising to 1,500 BTC.

Short-Term Whale Profits Reach Historic Levels

Bitcoin’s (BTC) short-term holder (STH) whales are sitting on unprecedented paper gains, a development that is raising questions about potential selling pressure during the current market consolidation.

According to CryptoQuant contributor IT Tech, unrealized profit for short-term holder whales climbed to $9.07 billion on September 4. This marks the highest reading for the metric since records began in 2016.

The unrealized profit figure subsequently eased to $7.51 billion on Saturday as Bitcoin’s price edged lower. Even so, the value remains among the five largest observations ever recorded, with each of those peaks occurring in the last two weeks.

“Unrealized profit at that scale is exposure. A cohort sitting on a record paper gain can turn into sellers the moment price wobbles,” the report stated.

IT Tech emphasized that short-term holder whales have previously reacted quickly to profit-taking opportunities. In that context, the current buildup of unrealized gains is seen as a potential source of additional selling if Bitcoin’s price retraces further.

“The cost basis structure argues the floor under this rally is real, but the unrealized gain sitting on top of it argues that the same floor is now being tested by its own success,” IT Tech added.

Long-Term Bitcoin Holders Step Up On-Chain Movements

Alongside elevated whale profitability, on-chain signals show that long-term Bitcoin investors have been more active during the latest consolidation phase.

CryptoQuant contributor Darkfost reported that Bitcoin holders with more than five years of holding history have increased their activity. The 90-day moving average of spent transaction outputs (STXOs) from this segment has risen to 1,500 BTC.

Darkfost noted that this pickup suggests these long-term investors have been moving a larger amount of BTC over the past three months compared with earlier in the year. The contributor highlighted that in May, this group was spending roughly half that level through their unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) on average.

“This consolidation period seems to have introduced some doubt across nearly every type of investor,” Darkfost noted.

Interpreting Long-Term Holder Transfers

Darkfost cautioned that higher STXO activity should not automatically be read as long-term holders exiting their positions.

“These movements certainly weren’t all sales. It’s possible that some of these investors moved their BTC to secure it,” Darkfost stated.

Darkfost also pointed to the recent Coldcard episode as one potential factor encouraging some holders to relocate their coins to storage options they consider more secure.
