Key Moments
- BNY’s Wee Khoon Chong indicates the Riksbank is largely satisfied with its current policy stance while inflation remains below target and CPI is anchored.
- Despite supportive real-rate conditions, SEK performance is held back by valuation worries and a high reading on Sweden’s KIX import-weighted exchange rate index.
- The Riksbank is seen as unlikely to accelerate the two hikes in its current repo path as long as consumer prices remain stable, even with producer prices moving higher.
Riksbank Policy Stance and Inflation Backdrop
BNY’s Wee Khoon Chong observes that Sweden’s Riksbank appears broadly satisfied with its existing monetary policy settings while inflation remains below its target. In his view, the two interest rate hikes that remain in the published repo rate path function mainly as a recognition of potential risks rather than a signal of imminent tightening.
Chong highlights that, despite a backdrop of favorable real interest rate dynamics, the Swedish Krona (SEK) has not delivered strong performance. He suggests that ongoing concerns about valuation are limiting the currency’s upside.
SEK Valuation, KIX Dynamics, and Central Bank Response
According to Chong, the Riksbank is unlikely to take forceful steps to bolster the SEK as long as consumer price inflation stays well contained. He points to the KIX – Sweden’s import-weighted exchange rate index – as an important factor shaping the Riksbank’s stance.
The KIX remains near the upper end of its recent trading range, a level that Chong notes would typically prompt the central bank to characterize the currency as undervalued. The June Monetary Policy Report assumed an annualized average KIX level of 116.18, an adjustment that reflects a weaker SEK and implies higher import prices.
| Indicator | Detail |
|---|---|
| Inflation | Described as remaining below target, with CPI seen as anchored |
| Repo rate path | Includes two hikes, viewed mainly as risk acknowledgment |
| KIX level | At the upper end of its recent range; June report assumed 116.18 (annualized average) |
| SEK valuation | Performance constrained by valuation concerns despite supportive real-rate backdrop |
Chong notes that Swedish producer prices are “clearly moving in tandem” with the weaker currency. However, he expects the central bank to refrain from more decisive action to support the SEK – such as pulling forward the two planned repo rate hikes – as long as consumer price inflation remains stable.
