Key Moments

  • Benchmark Dutch front-month gas futures fell 3.1% to about 59.18 euros per megawatt-hour after reaching multi-week highs earlier this week.
  • European Union gas storage stood at 59.32% of capacity, a record low for mid-August.
  • Meanwhile, Persian Gulf shipping disruptions and heat-driven power demand have slowed storage injections and kept a geopolitical risk premium in prices.

Rally Stalls as Profit-Taking Emerges

European natural gas prices fell on Thursday. The move ended a multi-session rally as traders locked in profits.

Benchmark Dutch front-month futures fell 3.1% to about 59.18 euros per megawatt-hour. Prices had reached multi-week highs earlier this week. Meanwhile, UK wholesale contracts dropped 2.74% to around 145.69 pence per therm.

The pullback followed a sharp rally. However, traders also reacted to softer expectations for near-term Federal Reserve rate hikes after an in-line U.S. inflation reading. Lower crude oil prices added to the pressure on gas benchmarks.

Storage Levels Highlight Structural Tension

Despite Thursday’s decline, European gas supply remains tight. Storage levels also remain a key concern as winter approaches.

Data from Gas Infrastructure Europe show EU storage at 59.32% of capacity. That marks a record low for mid-August. As a result, Europe faces greater pressure to rebuild inventories before the winter heating season.

Persian Gulf Disruptions and LNG Constraints

Shipping disruptions in the Persian Gulf have further slowed efforts to rebuild reserves. At the same time, talks between Washington and Tehran over transit rights through the Strait of Hormuz remain stalled.

As a result, Qatar-sourced LNG cargoes remain constrained. European buyers must therefore compete more aggressively with Asian buyers for alternative spot LNG supplies. This competition is keeping supply tight and procurement costs elevated.

Heatwaves Intensify Demand and Limit Injections

Persistent heatwaves across Southern and Central Europe have added to the pressure. Higher temperatures have lifted electricity demand for air conditioning.

Consequently, utilities are using more gas for power generation instead of storage injections. This trend could slow the pace of inventory rebuilding through the summer.

Risk Premium Seen Persisting

For now, traders expect gas contracts to retain a significant geopolitical risk premium. However, that premium could ease if LNG flows through the Persian Gulf normalize.

European storage also needs to improve meaningfully. Until then, supply risks and strong summer demand could keep prices volatile.
