Key Moments
- USD/CHF traded roughly flat around 0.8170 during Asian hours on Friday after recovering earlier losses.
- Market pricing reflected nearly a 70.9% probability of a Federal Reserve rate increase in December, even as US bond yields declined.
- Analysts at UOB Group saw scope for USD/CHF to test 0.8110, while identifying 0.8205 as the key resistance level that would invalidate the immediate downside view.
Safe-Haven Demand Supports the Franc
The Swiss Franc (CHF) advanced as investors turned more cautious, with political developments and prospects of gridlock in Washington boosting demand for perceived safe-haven assets. At the same time, the US Dollar (USD) struggled to build momentum as falling US bond yields and reduced expectations for additional Federal Reserve tightening limited the Greenback’s upside.
USD/CHF was little changed after an intraday recovery, trading near 0.8170 during Asian hours on Friday. The pair had previously trimmed losses as the USD drew some support from broader risk aversion ahead of the upcoming US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) release, which is expected to be pivotal for shaping market views on the Fed’s December policy decision.
Fed Expectations Capped by Lower Yields and Election Impact
The potential for further gains in the Greenback was constrained as US bond yields moved lower. A Democratic sweep weighed on oil prices amid speculation that the outcome could accelerate an end to the Iran war. That shift in expectations prompted traders to scale back assumptions for additional Fed rate hikes.
According to CME’s FedWatch tool, markets were assigning nearly a 70.9% probability to a Federal Reserve rate increase in December. At the same time, the Democrats’ victory heightened expectations of political gridlock in Washington, raising the prospect of tighter constraints on government spending and an associated drag on future economic growth.
Political Gridlock and Regulation Fears Lift CHF
The CHF benefited as the Democratic sweep fueled expectations of stricter oversight of the AI buildout, reinforcing safe-haven flows into the currency. The same political outcome also increased the perceived likelihood of fiscal restraint, which, together with the broader risk-off tone, supported demand for the Franc.
However, stronger safe-haven interest brought the risk that investors could unwind franc-funded carry trades. Those strategies had previously relied on the wide interest rate gap with the US and had been a key drag on CHF performance. Swiss borrowing costs have been among the lowest globally for more than a year, sustaining the Franc’s role as a favored funding currency for higher-yielding assets.
SNB Policy Outlook and Inflation Dynamics
Looking ahead, the Swiss National Bank (SNB) is not anticipated to raise interest rates in the near term. This policy stance is underpinned by comments from SNB Chair Schlegel, who reiterated that domestic inflation pressures remain contained.
Swiss inflation increased in October, driven by higher energy costs and a weaker Franc at the time. The subsequent appreciation of the currency has the potential to alleviate imported inflation, helping to keep broader price pressures in check.
UOB: Downside Bias for USD/CHF, Key Levels in Focus
Analysts at UOB Group maintained a cautious, negative bias on USD/CHF over a one-to-three-week horizon, although they noted that a more pronounced downside extension had yet to be fully confirmed. They recalled that, “tracking our negative USD view from late last week, we highlighted yesterday that USD ‘must break and hold below 0.8140 before further declines can be expected.’ We added, ‘the next level to watch below 0.8140 is 0.8110.’”
While USD/CHF did “break below 0.8140,” it subsequently “rebounded to close at 0.8168 (-0.46%),” meaning the close failed to validate a clean break of the level. Even so, UOB points out that “given the sharp decline to 0.8124, there is a chance for USD to test 0.8110 before the risk of a recovery increases.” On the topside, they stress that “a breach of 0.8205 (‘strong resistance’ was at 0.8220 yesterday) would mean that 0.8110 is not coming into view,” marking 0.8205 as the key barrier that would negate the immediate downside scenario.
| USD/CHF Technical Levels Highlighted by UOB | Level | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Initial downside trigger | 0.8140 | Must break and hold below for further declines |
| Next downside target | 0.8110 | Level to watch after a confirmed break of 0.8140 |
| Intraday low referenced | 0.8124 | Sharp decline increases chance of testing 0.8110 |
| Close cited | 0.8168 | Rebound close that failed to confirm a clean break lower |
| Key resistance | 0.8205 | Breach would imply 0.8110 is unlikely to be tested |
