Key Moments

  • XAG/USD trades around $56.00 per troy ounce in Asian hours after three straight sessions of losses.
  • September U.S. CPI printed above forecasts, lifting the 12-month headline rate to 3.7% and core CPI to 2.6%.
  • Futures markets assign roughly a 31.6% probability to a Fed rate hike at the October 27-28 FOMC meeting.

Silver Finds Support as Dollar and Yields Pull Back

Silver (XAG/USD) is recovering after three consecutive down sessions, trading near $56.00 per troy ounce during Asian dealings on Thursday. The move higher comes as declines in crude oil prices, easing pressure in broader markets, and a weaker U.S. dollar combine to support non-yielding precious metals.

Retreating bond yields are also helping the metal stabilize, fostering a more constructive backdrop for assets that do not offer interest income. These supportive cross-asset moves have allowed silver to claw back some recent losses despite lingering macro headwinds.

Upside Capped by Hot CPI and Fed Hike Expectations

The recovery in silver prices has been restrained by stronger-than-expected U.S. inflation data, which has reinforced the prospect of a more hawkish Federal Reserve stance. The latest figures have sharpened expectations that policymakers could opt for another rate increase at the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee meeting scheduled for October 27-28.

Following the inflation release, futures markets lifted the implied probability of a rate hike at the late-October gathering to around 31.6%, based on the CME Group’s FedWatch tool. The shift in expectations has tempered enthusiasm for precious metals by signaling that restrictive policy could persist for longer.

Inflation Data Exceeds Market Forecasts

The Bureau of Labor Statistics detailed the inflation picture in a report published on Wednesday. The U.S. Consumer Price Index, covering a broad spectrum of goods and services, advanced 0.6% month-over-month in September, matching the consensus forecast of 0.6%. This monthly gain pushed the 12-month headline rate to 3.7%, exceeding economists’ projections of 3.6%.

Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy components, rose 0.3% on the month and 2.6% year-over-year. Both readings topped market expectations of 0.2% and 2.5%, respectively, underscoring the persistence of underlying price pressures even as headline inflation reflects energy-driven moves.

Fed Communication: Hawkish Bias With Emphasis on Patience

Daly’s recent remarks reflect a more hawkish tilt relative to her historical communication profile. The FXS Speechtracker score stands at 6.8 versus a long-run average of 6.1, indicating stronger conviction about the potential need for additional tightening. Her comments highlight that headline inflation is being driven higher by gasoline while core inflation remains firm, and she underscores that further rate increases are likely, but implementation should be measured rather than rushed.

This stance places weight on transparent signaling and market stability, even as risks from inflation running above target and a resilient labor market remain central considerations. Daly also notes that markets have steadied following the CPI release, reinforcing a message that emphasizes patience within an overall framework still focused on price stability.

The FXS Fed Sentiment Index has edged down by 0.84 points to 128.17, signaling a marginal softening in perceived hawkishness. However, the index remains comfortably above the neutral 100 level, indicating that the broader policy environment continues to lean toward further tightening if inflation surprises persist. Taken together, the FXS Fed Sentiment Index and FXS Speechtracker point to a Fed that retains a tightening bias, even if the pace of additional moves is cautious.

Technical View: Bearish Structure Intact Below Key EMAs

On the daily chart, XAG/USD is trading near $56.00 and remains firmly in a bearish phase. The price is holding well below both the nine-day and 50-day Exponential Moving Averages, which are acting as dynamic resistance and reinforcing a weakening trend profile.

The 14-day Relative Strength Index stands at 32.36, hovering just above oversold territory. This suggests that selling pressure has been persistent, even as conditions approach levels often associated with stretched downside momentum. At the same time, the FXS Fed Sentiment Index at 128.17 highlights elevated policy uncertainty that may continue to pressure silver in the near term.

On the upside, the first notable resistance level coincides with the short-term EMA at $58.80. A decisive break above this area would be needed to alleviate immediate downside risks. Above that, the 50-day EMA at $62.61 represents a more substantial technical barrier.

As long as XAG/USD remains below this cluster of moving averages, rallies are likely to encounter selling interest, keeping the broader bearish bias in place over the coming sessions.

Why Investors Look at Silver

Silver is a widely traded precious metal that investors use for several purposes, including portfolio diversification, its perceived intrinsic value, and its potential role as a hedge during periods of elevated inflation. Market participants can gain exposure by purchasing physical silver in the form of coins or bars, or by using instruments such as Exchange Traded Funds that mirror its price performance in global markets.

Key Drivers of Silver Prices

Silver can respond to numerous macroeconomic and market forces. Episodes of geopolitical tension or deep recession concerns can lift prices owing to its safe-haven characteristics, although typically to a lesser degree than gold. Because it does not generate yield, silver tends to benefit when interest rates fall.

Movements in the U.S. dollar are also critical, as silver is priced in dollars (XAG/USD). A strong dollar generally restrains silver, while a weaker dollar tends to be supportive. Other influences include investment flows, mining supply – with silver being more abundant than gold – and recycling activity, all of which can affect the balance between supply and demand.

Industrial and Geographic Demand Factors

Industrial usage is an important component of silver demand. The metal is employed in sectors such as electronics and solar energy due to its very high electrical conductivity, which exceeds that of copper and gold. Rising industrial demand can push prices higher, whereas slowing demand can pressure them lower.

Economic dynamics in major economies are also relevant. The industrial bases of the U.S. and especially China use silver in various manufacturing and technological applications, while in India, demand for silver jewelry plays a significant role in shaping local and global consumption trends.

Relationship With Gold

Silver prices often move in tandem with gold, reflecting their similar appeal as safe-haven assets. When gold prices advance, silver frequently follows. The Gold/Silver ratio – the number of ounces of silver required to match the value of one ounce of gold – is sometimes used to gauge the relative valuation between the two metals.

Some investors view a high Gold/Silver ratio as a sign that silver may be undervalued or gold overvalued. Conversely, a low ratio can be interpreted as suggesting that gold is undervalued compared with silver.
