Key Moments

  • GBP/JPY trades just under 210.00 after rebounding from levels near 208.00 last week, with buyers eyeing resistance around 211.00.
  • Japanese Yen remains pressured amid worries over elevated public debt, rising Oil prices, and weak Household Spending data.
  • Technical structure stays constructive for GBP/JPY, with support near 209.00 and a potential double bottom formation around 207.00.

Yen Weakness Supports GBP/JPY Upside

The British Pound extended its advance against the Japanese Yen for a second straight session on Monday, with the GBP/JPY cross trading only a few pips below 210.00. The move follows a bounce from levels close to 208.00 seen last week, as market participants position for a possible test of the upper boundary of the monthly trading band near the 211.00 region.

The Japanese Yen remains under pressure as investors focus on Japan’s sizable public debt burden and the impact of higher Oil prices. These concerns have kept the currency on the defensive and have contributed to the recent strength in GBP/JPY.

Domestic Data and Fiscal Concerns Undermine the Yen

Yen selling accelerated on Friday after new figures showed Japanese Household Spending fell for the ninth consecutive month in August. The data added to signs that elevated prices are weighing on domestic demand in Japan.

At the same time, what is described as a global government bond crisis is weighing on the Yen. Japan’s public debt is characterized as one of the largest among major economies, and official plans aimed at supporting economic growth are seen as potentially pushing government spending even higher. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi came out last week to pledge a “responsive and proactive” fiscal policy but, so far, it has failed to restore market confidence.

GBP/JPY Technical View: Bulls Target Monthly Range High

GBP/JPY is quoted at 209.91, maintaining a constructive bullish tone. Key resistance is identified at the top of the current monthly range, slightly above 211.00. On the 4-hour chart, momentum signals are aligned with this positive bias, with the Relative Strength Index (14) moving above the 60 mark and the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) staying moderately in positive territory.

On the upside, buyers may encounter initial hurdles around the highs posted on September 25 and October 6 and 7, clustered near 210.20, before confronting the upper range levels between the September 18 high at 211.28 and the September 4 peaks around 211.80. A decisive move through this band would validate a double bottom configuration around 207.00, which is described as a common pattern associated with trend reversals.

On the downside, first support lies at Friday’s low of 209.00. Below that, deeper demand levels are seen around the early October troughs near 207.60 and in the previously mentioned 207.00 zone.
