Key Moments

  • ICE Brent fell more than 2% at one point even as Middle East tensions escalated, including a deadly Houthi attack in Riyadh.
  • A US-Russia agreement allows Russia to ship 300kt of diesel immediately, 500kt in November, and 1mt in December, with temporary US sanctions relief.
  • ING sees limited upside for long Brent positions above $100/bbl given political risks and upcoming US midterm elections.

Middle East Escalation Meets Surprisingly Soft Crude Prices

ING analysts Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey observe that crude prices are trading lower even as geopolitical risks in the Middle East increase. They point out that, despite an escalation of the conflict in the region, oil benchmarks have not reacted as strongly as might typically be expected.

They note that ICE Brent traded more than 2% lower at one stage, despite reports of intensified tensions and attacks in the area.

Analysts Highlight Russian Diesel as Key Driver

Patterson and Manthey argue that the day’s price action is being driven more by developments involving Russia than by Middle East headlines. They emphasize that new Russian diesel export flows and related political moves are exerting pressure on middle distillate margins.

Russian Diesel Export Schedule Under US Deal
300kt of diesel exported immediately
500kt of diesel exported in November
1mt of diesel exported in December

Details of the US-Russia Diesel Agreement

The analysts cite an announcement by US President Donald Trump of an agreement with Russia that allows for additional Russian diesel exports into the market. Under this arrangement, Russia is set to export 300kt of diesel immediately, followed by 500kt in November and 1mt in December. As part of the deal, the US will temporarily ease sanctions on Russian diesel.

They stress that these extra barrels are not expected to fully resolve the tightness in the middle distillate segment but are already weighing on the gasoil crack.

Energy Ceasefire and Middle Distillate Market Impact

The analysts also reference President Trump’s statement that Russia and Ukraine have agreed on an energy ceasefire. They note that this development adds further downward pressure to the market, contributing to weakness in middle distillate cracks.

At the same time, they explain that the structure of trade flows from the Middle East remains inefficient, and elevated freight costs are keeping refined product prices relatively high even as cracks come under pressure.

Persian Gulf Flows and Trade Inefficiencies

According to Patterson and Manthey, a key factor offsetting geopolitical risk is the continued strength of crude flows from the Persian Gulf. They underline that volumes remain robust, helping to counterbalance concerns related to the regional conflict.

However, they also point out that the way this oil is being shipped is far from optimal. Inefficient trade routes and high shipping costs are limiting the extent to which refined product prices can decline.

Political Pressure Ahead of US Midterms

The analysts remark that domestic political pressures in the US are rising as the midterm elections approach. They note that President Trump is under increasing scrutiny to address elevated oil and diesel prices, which is shaping policy decisions such as the diesel deal with Russia and the energy ceasefire announcement.

They argue that a more pronounced decline in refined product prices will likely require a normalization of conditions in the Middle East, not only in terms of volumes but also in how oil is being moved out of the Persian Gulf.

Risk-Reward View on Brent Above $100

From a positioning standpoint, Patterson and Manthey caution against taking on substantial long exposure with ICE Brent above $100/bbl in the current environment. They highlight the asymmetric risk that policy decisions could quickly shift market dynamics.

They conclude that, given the political backdrop and the possibility of unexpected measures from the US administration, the risk-reward profile for bullish crude positions is not particularly attractive at present.
