Key Moments
- EUR/CHF is stabilizing after a sharp decline linked to concerns over French debt and reduced expectations for ECB tightening.
- Markets are currently pricing 22bp of ECB hikes in December and an additional 30-40bp of tightening into next year, according to ING.
- ING highlights a potential EUR/CHF range between 0.9230/0.9250 on renewed stress and 0.9350/0.9400 during calmer market conditions.
Consolidation After Debt-Driven Sell-Off
Chris Turner at ING notes that EUR/CHF is in a consolidation phase following a pronounced drop just over a week earlier. He explains that the earlier move lower was triggered by mounting worries over French debt, which were significant enough to reduce expectations for further tightening by the European Central Bank.
ECB Expectations and Rate Pricing
Turner points out that it is uncertain whether short-dated euro rates need to decline much further from current levels, unless there is a marked fall in energy prices. He observes that market pricing currently reflects 22bp of rate hikes in December – while ING itself expects a 25bp move – followed by an additional 30-40bp of tightening heading into next year.
With eurozone inflation still moving higher, he highlights that September eurozone CPI is expected to be confirmed at 3.8% year-on-year this week. In that context, Turner argues that it appears premature to assume that potential 2027 ECB hikes will be removed from the outlook.
French Spreads and EUR/CHF Trading Ranges
Turner characterizes the resulting outlook for EUR/CHF as mixed. He states that a move in the OAT-Bund spread decisively through the 150bp area could open the door to a correction in EUR/CHF toward the 0.9230/0.9250 region. At the same time, he notes that intervals of reduced market stress could allow the currency pair to drift back up toward the 0.9350/0.9400 area.
