Key Moments
- AUD/USD trades below the 0.7000 level after failing to build on early Asian-session gains.
- Expectations for a 25-basis-point Fed rate hike in December and Middle East tensions help contain US Dollar weakness.
- Traders await upcoming US PPI and CPI data and a speech by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh for fresh direction.
Dollar Softens, but Fed Stance and Risks Curb Losses
The AUD/USD pair draws some interest from dip-buyers, supported by slightly lower US bond yields that keep US Dollar bulls cautious. Even so, the pair is unable to extend its modest advance from the Asian session and continues to trade under the 0.7000 psychological barrier, retreating from the nearly two-week high reached earlier on Monday.
The recent pullback in US yields from multi-year peaks has weighed on the US Dollar at the start of the week, amid optimism that a Russian-Ukraine energy peace deal could ease global fuel supply strains and temper inflation concerns. However, the US Federal Reserve’s hawkish tone, combined with persistent tensions in the Middle East, is helping to limit downside in the safe-haven Greenback and is restraining further upside in AUD/USD.
Fed Expectations Remain Firm for December
Market pricing has shifted away from anticipating a rate increase at the late-October Federal Reserve meeting, but expectations for a 25-basis-point move in December remain intact. Those views were reinforced by the September FOMC Minutes, released last Wednesday, which showed that policymakers continue to see inflation as the primary risk to macroeconomic stability and maintain support for additional policy tightening before year-end.
Middle East Developments Support Safe-Haven Demand
Geopolitical risks in the Middle East are also underpinning demand for the US Dollar. The Iran-backed Houthi group in Yemen intensified its actions against Saudi Arabia over the weekend, targeting Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport with a combination of ballistic and cruise missiles and drones. In addition, US President Donald Trump raised the prospect of resuming strikes on Iran. These developments are keeping the geopolitical risk premium elevated and are encouraging renewed buying interest in the safe-haven US currency.
Key Data and Fed Communication Ahead
Positioning in AUD/USD is being tempered by caution ahead of major US macro releases and Federal Reserve communication. Traders are reluctant to adopt strong directional stances before the latest US inflation readings – the Producer Price Index (PPI) and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) due on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. Market participants will then turn their attention to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s remarks at the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Bangkok on Friday, which are expected to influence the US Dollar and could deliver fresh momentum for the AUD/USD pair.
AUD/USD Technical Setup
On the 4-hour chart, AUD/USD is struggling to secure acceptance above the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement level and continues to trade with a bearish short-term bias while it remains below the 100-period Simple Moving Average (SMA). This configuration indicates that rebounds are likely to encounter selling interest as long as spot prices stay capped beneath this technical cluster.
On the downside, the next notable area of structural support is located near the Fibonacci anchor around 0.6902. That zone is expected to attract stronger buying interest if the decline extends.
