Analyst Sees Market Share Expansion Hitting a Ceiling
AppLovin (NASDAQ: APP) traded 3.5% lower after Edgewater Research analyst Joe Wittine warned that the mobile advertising platform’s market share gains appear to have stalled. Based on new channel checks, Wittine reduced expectations for the company’s growth outlook and signaled that Wall Street’s assumptions need to come down.
Wittine now anticipates AppLovin will deliver fourth-quarter revenue growth of just 8% to 9% on a quarter-over-quarter basis, a level that he framed as a materially lower bar than what investors had been expecting.
According to Wittine, key internal metrics are no longer consistently moving higher from their already strong positions. He concluded that AppLovin’s share of wallet (SOW) and share of voice (SOV) have effectively stopped rising in a steady fashion.
“This is primarily the inevitable result of MAX’s share reaching a functional ceiling, though our interpretation of feedback also increasingly indicates competition is compressing APP’s net revenue spreads, contributing to APP’s decel,” Wittine wrote.
Pressure on MAX Undercuts Structural Growth Narrative
The combination of a supply ceiling for MAX and shrinking net revenue spreads due to competition cuts to the heart of the long-term growth thesis that has supported AppLovin’s premium valuation. MAX, the company’s core ad network, aggregates in-app inventory across mobile gaming and has been the primary driver of its revenue expansion.
Wittine’s latest work suggests MAX is operating closer to its capacity than previously assumed by the Street. That interpretation raises questions about the sustainability of the rapid scaling that investors had priced into the stock.
Sequential Growth Outlook Shows Signs of Flattening
Edgewater’s updated projections indicate a slower ramp than bulls might have hoped for when looking at AppLovin’s revenue path. The company reported $1.92 billion in revenue last quarter and guided third-quarter revenue to a range of $2.055 billion to $2.085 billion, which implies sequential growth of roughly 7% to 8.6% quarter-over-quarter.
If AppLovin achieves only the 8% to 9% quarter-over-quarter growth in the fourth quarter that Wittine is forecasting, the pattern points to sequential growth leveling off rather than accelerating into year-end.
| Period | Metric | Figure / Range | Sequential Growth Indication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last reported quarter | Revenue | $1.92 billion | N/A |
| Q3 guidance | Revenue | $2.055 billion – $2.085 billion | ~7% – 8.6% quarter-over-quarter |
| Q4 (Edgewater forecast) | Revenue growth | 8% – 9% quarter-over-quarter | Indicates flattening trajectory |
Reassessment of Earlier Bullish Call
Wittine also took a critical look at Edgewater’s own prior stance on the stock. The firm had upgraded AppLovin in May, based on the belief that growth in hybrid and in-app advertising would continue to drive incremental supply onto MAX.
“Our May upgrade thesis of hybrid/IAA growth yielding more MAX supply takes a meaningful hit in this update, with the pace of expansion slowing vs. the Spring,” Wittine acknowledged, adding that Edgewater will be monitoring how this trend evolves.
Algorithm Update Offers Limited Comfort
Another potential support for the bull case has been an algorithm update that AppLovin’s management discussed on its second-quarter earnings call. However, Wittine’s recent checks did not fully validate a strong improvement.
He described the evidence of progress in August as only “spotty,” and suggested the visible recovery appeared to be largely a rebound from a weaker July, rather than a clear step forward in performance.
Unity Competition and Margin Risks
Competitive dynamics are adding to AppLovin’s challenges. Wittine highlighted Unity (NYSE: U) as a continuing rival whose growing scale is pressuring AppLovin’s net revenue spreads. This shift affects the balance of supply and demand within mobile ad auctions and raises the risk of broader margin compression.
Such margin pressure could in turn challenge the elevated EBITDA multiples that AppLovin has historically enjoyed in the public markets.
Expectations Reset Ahead of Earnings
Wittine framed the current environment as a necessary recalibration for investors.
“This has turned into a show-me story,” Wittine explained. He noted that the ongoing reset to sell-side expectations means late-2026 and 2027 consensus estimates will likely move lower before the company’s third-quarter earnings report. However, he views this as a “healthy” adjustment for Street sentiment that had previously dismissed the law of large numbers as irrelevant to AppLovin’s trajectory.
