EUR/JPY Strengthens After BoJ Decision
EUR/JPY is trading around 180.20 in Asian dealings on Friday, rebounding after registering slight declines the previous day. The cross is gaining ground as the Japanese Yen (JPY) softens in the wake of the Bank of Japan’s latest policy announcement.
At the conclusion of its two-day monetary policy meeting on Friday, the Bank of Japan (BoJ) board voted 7-2 to increase the short-term interest rate by 25 basis points to 1.25% from 1.00%. The outcome fully matched market expectations.
BoJ Outlook: Gradual Inflation Progress and Ongoing Risks
In its policy statement, the BoJ stated that financial conditions remain accommodative and that underlying inflation is slowly moving toward its objective. The central bank indicated it plans to continue raising rates in step with economic and price developments.
The BoJ projected that underlying inflation will reach levels consistent with its 2% goal from the latter half of fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2027. At the same time, policymakers emphasized the importance of closely watching how the ongoing situation in the Middle East affects economic activity, price dynamics, and conditions in global financial and foreign exchange markets.
ECB Tightening Continues Amid Elevated Inflation Risks
In the euro area, the European Central Bank (ECB) last week raised its key deposit rate by 25 basis points to 2.50% from 2.25%, in line with investor expectations. This marked the second rate increase since the start of the Iran war. The ECB reiterated that it will not commit in advance to any specific path for future policy moves.
During the decision announcement, ECB President Christine Lagarde underscored that geopolitical tensions continue to weigh on the economic outlook. Lagarde said that the Middle East conflict and recent developments related to Russia’s war on Ukraine are likely to keep headline inflation “well above” the ECB’s 2% target for an extended period.
Eurozone Inflation and Market Pricing
Strategists at Scotiabank observed that the most recent euro area inflation readings did not significantly alter the prevailing policy narrative. They noted that the “final euro area CPI release offered little in terms of surprise, with headline inflation remaining in the low 3% area and core hovering in the mid-2% range.”
They further commented that “messaging from the ECB remains hawkish,” and pointed out that markets are now “pricing just over a 50% chance of a hike in October with a cumulative 36bpts of tightening by December,” highlighting that investors still expect additional tightening even in the absence of new inflation shocks.
BoJ Interest Rate Decision – Latest Release
The BoJ’s interest rate decision is announced following each of the Bank’s eight scheduled meetings per year. Typically, a hawkish stance on inflation that results in a rate increase is considered supportive for the Japanese Yen, while a dovish stance involving unchanged or lower rates is generally seen as negative for the currency.
