Google Deepens AI Push Into Legal Services
Alphabet’s Google expanded its Gemini Enterprise artificial intelligence platform on Tuesday with a suite of tools tailored specifically for law firms and legal professionals, intensifying competition among technology providers looking to serve the legal industry’s growing appetite for AI.
The company said the new Gemini Enterprise for Legal is designed to help law firms apply AI to both routine and complex legal workflows, freeing up lawyers to concentrate on higher-value advisory work while keeping sensitive information protected and confidential.
Capabilities and Integration of Gemini Enterprise for Legal
The updated Gemini Enterprise platform introduces a dedicated plug-in for legal users that incorporates connections to legal software and data systems. It also includes a set of AI agents that Google said are capable of performing specialized legal and administrative tasks with limited human involvement.
Google positioned the new legal offering as a flexible solution. According to Amrita Mehrok, a Google Cloud product director, the platform is intended to give firms the ability to select among AI models that are embedded in Gemini Enterprise.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Product name | Gemini Enterprise for Legal |
| Core focus | Support for routine and complex legal work while maintaining data security and confidentiality |
| Key components | Legal plug-in, integrations with legal tech platforms, AI agents for specialized functions |
| Model flexibility | Law firms can choose among AI models embedded in the platform |
Expansion Beyond Legal and Positioning Within Alphabet
Alphabet introduced Gemini Enterprise for business customers in October as part of its strategy to bring more corporate users onto its AI infrastructure. Within Alphabet, Google Cloud has been one of the company’s fastest-growing segments.
Alongside the legal-focused expansion, Google said on Tuesday that it is also introducing industry-specific tools for financial services and plans to follow with additional sector-focused offerings.
Competitive Landscape and Legal AI Adoption
Other AI developers have also been broadening their enterprise-focused products, including in the legal arena. The article noted that a 2026 report on the legal industry’s use of AI from Deloitte found that law firms are making substantial investments in the technology as part of a transformation that remains at an early stage.
Thomson Reuters, which owns Reuters and the Westlaw legal research database, is one of the players competing for legal market share. On Monday, it introduced a proprietary large language model named Thomson 1.0 that is trained on its legal research materials and aimed at professional users. The company said the model is based on open-source technology and leverages decades of its own “authoritative” legal content.
Partnerships and Ecosystem Connections
Google said its platform will connect directly and securely to several leading legal technology providers, including platforms controlled by Thomson Reuters, legal AI software developer Harvey, data analytics and technology provider LexisNexis and other firms.
Law firms are increasingly incorporating generative AI into their operations, using it for tasks such as legal research, drafting court filings and other forms of legal work. Many firms are also deploying AI tools for business functions like client management and case administration as they look to reduce costs and boost productivity.
| Partner / Provider | Role / Connection |
|---|---|
| Thomson Reuters | Owner of Reuters and Westlaw; legal platforms will connect to Gemini Enterprise for Legal |
| Harvey | Legal AI software developer whose technology will be integrated with Google’s platform |
| LexisNexis | Data analytics and technology company whose platforms will link directly and securely to Gemini Enterprise for Legal |
| Thomson 1.0 | Thomson Reuters’ proprietary large language model trained on its legal research content |
Law Firm Collaborations and Market Expectations
Some large law firms have entered into strategic arrangements with AI providers and, in certain cases, are constructing their own AI systems. Google said firms including Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields and Williams & Connolly are among those working with the company on the development and use of Gemini Enterprise for Legal.
Weil Gotshal’s co-managing partner Jonathon Soler said in an interview that clients are increasingly expecting their legal advisers to use AI and benefit from the efficiencies it can provide.
Cleary Gottlieb managing partner Jeffrey Karpf said the firm’s collaboration with Google would allow it to “be involved in the creation of useful tools for law firms deploying AI.”
