  • Bank Indonesia keeps its benchmark rate at 5.75% for a third straight meeting in August, in line with consensus expectations.

Rupiah Holds Firm After Bank Indonesia Decision

USD/IDR retreats during Wednesday’s European session, trading near 17,870 after modest gains the previous day. The move reflects a stronger Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) following Bank Indonesia’s latest policy announcement.

Bank Indonesia left its key policy rate unchanged at 5.75% in August, marking the third consecutive meeting at that level and aligning with market expectations. The decision comes in the wake of former governor Perry Warjiyo’s unexpected resignation last month and the naming of Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as interim governor, a transition that has raised questions about the central bank’s autonomy from political influence.

Shifting Fed Expectations Pressure the Dollar

The USD/IDR pair also faces downward pressure from a softer US Dollar as markets scale back expectations of a US interest rate increase next month. Recent US data showed Retail Sales declining in July for the first time in nine months, adding to worries following unexpected job losses and subdued CPI inflation readings.

The Federal Reserve left rates unchanged at its most recent meeting, although three policymakers dissented in favor of a hike. That split has turned investor attention toward the forthcoming meeting minutes for further clues on internal divisions at the Fed. According to the CME FedWatch tool, traders now see only a 32.8% likelihood of a rate increase at the Fed’s September meeting, sharply lower than the 51.2% probability priced in a month earlier.

US Treasury Yields Pull Back as Data Disappoints

US Treasury yields have reversed course after a recent upswing stalled. Analysts at Deutsche Bank noted that the latest move in rates diverged from the broader market pattern, pointing out that “the main exception to this pattern yesterday was US Treasury yields, which initially looked set for new highs before falling back.”

The pullback in yields followed weaker US housing and industrial figures, which led the Atlanta Fed to reduce its Q3 GDPNow projection. That adjustment allowed yields to ease from recent highs and contributed to a weaker tone for the Dollar.
