Key Moments

  • The STOXX 600 fell 0.5% to 643.47 points by 0705 GMT, pressured primarily by technology names.
  • STMicroelectronics dropped 15% after issuing a third-quarter revenue outlook with a midpoint slightly below market expectations.
  • The STOXX 600 energy index gained 0.6% as Brent crude moved above $96 per barrel amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Tech Sector Pullback Weighs on Benchmarks

European equity markets traded lower on Thursday, with technology stocks exerting the heaviest pressure after quarterly results from U.S. heavyweight Alphabet and fresh guidance from key European chipmakers. Investors also monitored developments in the Middle East and looked ahead to the European Central Bank’s policy announcement.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index declined 0.5% to 643.47 points by 0705 GMT.

Technology shares fell 2.7%, making the sector one of the weakest performers in early trading. STMicroelectronics slumped 15% after the chipmaker issued a third-quarter revenue forecast whose midpoint came in slightly below market expectations.

BE Semiconductor Industries also traded lower, dropping 4.6% following its second-quarter earnings release.

Alphabet Spending Plans Stir AI Return Concerns

Alphabet’s latest update added to the negative sentiment surrounding technology stocks. On Wednesday, the company increased its capital expenditure plans for 2026 by $15 billion, intensifying questions in the market about whether its artificial intelligence investments will translate into tangible financial returns.

Energy Stocks Rise on Oil Price Gains

In contrast to the weakness in technology, energy shares provided some support to the broader market. The STOXX 600 energy index advanced 0.6% as Brent crude futures climbed above $96 per barrel.

The move in oil prices followed a new round of U.S. strikes on Iran and attacks by Yemen’s Houthis on oil tankers in the Red Sea. These developments have broadened the scope of a conflict that has disrupted the global rates outlook.
