Key Moments
- NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) has held discussions with major South Korean power equipment makers to explore 800 volt direct current data center designs.
- The proposed 800 V DC architecture aims to reduce current, copper usage, and cable bulk compared with existing 54 V data center systems.
- Compatibility with current infrastructure remains a central challenge, even as South Korean firms and memory suppliers play a crucial role in Nvidia’s broader ecosystem.
Nvidia Targets Next-Generation Power Infrastructure
Investing.com– NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) has approached leading South Korean power equipment manufacturers to collaborate on higher-voltage data center infrastructure, according to a report from Korean outlet The Asia Business Daily released on Wednesday.
The report, citing industry sources, stated that Nvidia asked these manufacturers to develop data center power systems based on 800 volt direct current configurations.
Technical Shift Toward 800 V DC Systems
The discussions in South Korea are part of a wider global initiative by Nvidia to create more power-efficient data center architectures. Instead of routing electricity from the grid through several conversion stages before it reaches processors, Nvidia has proposed a design that relies on a single DC conversion, distributing high voltage throughout the facility.
The company said in a blog post that moving to 800 V cuts current, copper consumption, and cable bulk when compared with the prevailing 54 V data center power setups.
Infrastructure Compatibility and Potential Partners
The report highlighted that a major constraint for Nvidia’s proposed power architecture is how well it can integrate with existing infrastructure.
The Asia Business Daily noted that it was not immediately clear which specific South Korean companies Nvidia had entered into discussions with. However, it identified several firms as potential candidates, including Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems Co Ltd (KS: 267260), LS Electric (KS: 010120), and Hyosung Heavy Industries Corp (KS: 298040), all of which are active in the development of new energy infrastructure.
