Microsoft Expands In-House AI Strategy

Microsoft is accelerating efforts to build its own large-scale AI models. The company aims to reduce reliance on partners such as OpenAI and Anthropic. This move reflects a broader push to control core AI capabilities.

Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, said the company is targeting state-of-the-art performance by 2027. The plan includes models that handle text, images, and audio. As a result, Microsoft is positioning itself as a direct competitor in advanced AI systems.

Speech Model Targets Efficiency and Scale

Microsoft recently introduced a new speech transcription model. It performs strongly across many major languages. In fact, the model outperforms competitors in 11 of the 25 most widely spoken languages.

The company designed this model for efficiency. It uses fewer data points than general-purpose systems like Claude 3 Opus and GPT-4. Therefore, it can deliver strong results with lower training costs.

Compute Expansion With Nvidia Chips

Microsoft is also expanding its AI infrastructure. The company began operating a cluster of Nvidia GB200 chips in October. This system supports more advanced model training and deployment.

Looking ahead, Microsoft plans to reach frontier-level compute capacity within 12 to 18 months. This expansion will support more complex AI workloads. In turn, it strengthens the company’s long-term AI ambitions.
