On January 19th Wells Fargo & Company (WFC) announced a merger between its international business and its wholesale banking unit. At the same time, Richard Yorke was appointed as Chief Operating Officer of the groups wholesale banking business.

Wells Fargo shares closed higher for a second straight session on Thursday. The stock went up 0.57% ($0.31) to $54.58, with the daily high and the daily low being at $54.77 and $53.86 respectively. In the week ended on January 15th the shares of the bank holding company added 0.49% to their market value compared to a week ago, which marked the first gain in the past three weeks. The stock has pared its drop to 0.96% so far during the current month, after rising 4.14% in December. The latter has been a third straight month of advance. For the entire 2016, the shares of the NYSE-listed holding company gained 1.38%.

Before assuming the COO role, Richard Yorke is to take an interim position as a senior member of a team, engaged in potential bankruptcy planning. A permanent member of the team is expected to be Scott Zaret, who has an executive role in Wells Fargos risk department.

According to a statement by Alan Elias, spokesperson for the bank holding, Wells Fargos international business was previously separated due to its small size and the need for more individual attention.

The groups international operations grew more earnestly following the acquisition of Wachovia in early 2009.

As of the present moment, Wells Fargo has expanded its international presence to 42 countries, while employing almost 3 000 people in the Asia-Pacific region, Europe and the UK. However, only 4% of its revenue comes from outside the United States.
