In an attempt to boost the economy and take it back to the favorable levels UK government is forced to make spending cuts. The unemployment of 7.8% has been a reason for more than 500 000 people to be going hungry as food becomes more expensive, jobless claims rise.

Max Goldring, CEO of Oxfam, one of the charities said for CNN Money “Cuts to social safety nets have gone too far, leading to destitution, hardship and hunger on a large scale. It is unacceptable that this is happening in the seventh wealthiest nation on the planet” he added.

The UK economy bounced back to growth the first quarter of the year but its expected to advance just by 0.6% in 2013.

The most significant area of spending cuts seems to be welfare. Changes were introduced in April in order to save billions of pounds including cap for benefits for working age people, a below inflation increase of 2013-2014 and reduction in housing support which directly concerns millions of households.

Charities are giving important signals to the government of what is happening on the streets. The number of people that turned to charity food banks this year have tripled according to some charities.
