Key Moments

  • USD/CHF trades around 0.8140 in Asian hours, marking a second straight day of declines.
  • Robust ADP hiring and solid ISM Services data underpin expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike.
  • Swiss inflation at 1.5% year-on-year in October raises doubts that the SNB can avoid tightening policy through 2027.

Dollar Weakens as Political and Commodity Shifts Benefit the Franc

USD/CHF extends its downside for a second consecutive session, with the pair trading near 0.8140 during Asian hours on Thursday. The move reflects broad US Dollar weakness following a Democratic sweep in the US midterm elections, which gave Democrats control of both houses of Congress and heightened concerns about potential political gridlock in Washington.

At the same time, market expectations for a rapid resolution of the Middle East conflict have driven a sharp pullback in oil prices, adding further pressure on the Greenback. Against this backdrop, the Swiss Franc has strengthened as investors reassess relative macro and policy dynamics between the United States and Switzerland.

Resilient US Data Keeps Fed Rate Hike Expectations Intact

Despite the softer US Dollar, domestic economic indicators in the United States continue to support the case for additional monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve. The latest ADP employment report showed that private-sector payrolls expanded by 86,000 in October, surpassing market expectations of 69,000. This outperformance came even as the September figure was revised lower to 86,000 from 90,000.

Service-sector activity also remained firm. The ISM Services PMI edged down to 54.5 from 54.9, marginally below the 54.8 consensus forecast but still comfortably within expansion territory. These data points have reinforced market expectations that the Fed is not yet done with rate hikes.

According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders are assigning nearly an 82% probability to another rate increase in December. Investors are now focused on upcoming US releases, including weekly Initial Jobless Claims on Thursday and the Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report on Friday, for further guidance on the Fed’s policy path.

Rising Swiss Inflation Bolsters the Franc

The Swiss Franc is drawing additional support from domestic inflation dynamics. Swiss consumer prices rose 1.5% year-on-year in October, an outcome that surprised markets and has cast doubt on whether the Swiss National Bank can avoid raising interest rates through 2027. The higher-than-expected inflation reading has strengthened expectations that Swiss policy may ultimately need to tighten further, providing a fundamental tailwind for CHF against major counterparts, including the US Dollar.

Technical View: UOB Flags 0.8140 as Key Support for USD/CHF

Strategists at UOB Group maintain a cautiously bearish stance on USD/CHF over the 1-3 week horizon but note that additional downside now depends on whether a key support zone is decisively breached. They recall that they “revised our view to slightly negative last Friday (30 Oct, spot at 0.8240), highlighting that USD ‘could edge lower, but any decline should stay within a 0.8190/0.8290 range.’”

That assessment shifted after USD “broke clearly below 0.8190,” prompting UOB yesterday to remark that “downward momentum is increasing rapidly, and USD could decline to 0.8165, potentially testing 0.8140.” The currency pair subsequently “dropped to 0.8148 before rebounding strongly,” leading the bank to conclude that “downward momentum has slowed.”

Looking ahead, UOB emphasizes that “USD must break and hold below 0.8140 before further declines can be expected,” identifying “the next level to watch below 0.8140” at “0.8110.” On the upside, they add that “a break above 0.8220 (‘strong resistance’ level was at 0.8255 yesterday) would mean that USD is not declining further.”

Swiss Franc: Key Characteristics and Market Drivers

The Swiss Franc (CHF) is the official currency of Switzerland and ranks among the ten most actively traded currencies worldwide, with trading volumes that far exceed the size of Switzerland’s domestic economy. Its valuation is shaped by broad risk sentiment, Switzerland’s macroeconomic conditions, and policy moves by the Swiss National Bank, among other influences.

Between 2011 and 2015, CHF was pegged to the Euro (EUR). The abrupt removal of this peg triggered a more than 20% surge in the Franc’s value and significant disruption in global markets. Although the peg is no longer in place, CHF performance is still closely linked to EUR, reflecting the Swiss economy’s heavy exposure to the neighboring Eurozone.
