Key Moments
- NZD/USD trades near 0.5620-0.5625 after rebounding from support around 0.5580, the lowest level since April 2025.
- China’s September CPI and PPI data come in mixed versus expectations, but have little immediate impact on NZD/USD.
- Traders focus on upcoming U.S. CPI and PPI releases and a speech by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh for guidance on USD direction.
NZD/USD Extends Recovery but Lacks Strong Momentum
NZD/USD continues to attract buying interest for a second consecutive session on Wednesday, extending its recovery from the 0.5580 area. That zone marked the lowest level in the pair since April 2025. During the Asian session, spot prices reach a fresh weekly peak in the 0.5620-0.5625 band as demand for the U.S. Dollar remains muted.
The move higher unfolds in a context of softer U.S. Dollar sentiment, with a recent pullback in U.S. bond yields keeping USD bulls cautious. Even so, the upside in NZD/USD remains moderate and lacks aggressive follow-through buying.
China Inflation Data Mixed, Market Focus Stays on U.S. CPI
China’s National Bureau of Statistics reports that the headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) increases 0.9% year-on-year in September, compared with 0.8% in the previous month and below market expectations for a 1.0% reading.
At the same time, the Producer Price Index (PPI) rises 5.0% year-on-year, beating consensus forecasts for a move to 4.5% from 3.8% in August. Despite this upside surprise in producer prices, the data does not generate a significant reaction in NZD/USD. Market participants keep their attention firmly on U.S. consumer inflation figures scheduled for release later in the day.
Upcoming U.S. Data and Fed Communication in Focus
Beyond the imminent U.S. CPI report, investors also look ahead to the U.S. Producer Price Index release on Thursday. That will be followed by comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Bangkok on Friday.
Market participants are expected to scrutinize Warsh’s remarks for signals on the Federal Reserve’s policy trajectory. These developments are likely to be key drivers of near-term U.S. Dollar performance and could provide more decisive direction for NZD/USD.
For now, the pullback in U.S. bond yields leaves the Dollar trading below the 18-month high reached on Monday, limiting downside pressure on the New Zealand Dollar. However, the broader backdrop still includes expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates again by the end of this year. Escalating tensions in the Middle East also support demand for the safe-haven Dollar, helping cap NZD/USD gains.
Against this backdrop, market participants may be cautious about assuming that NZD/USD has put in a durable short-term floor without stronger buying interest and confirmation from incoming data and Fed communication.
Technical Overview: Key Levels for NZD/USD
From a technical standpoint, NZD/USD faces an important resistance band in the 0.5630-0.5635 area. This zone aligns closely with the 100-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) on the 4-hour chart. A decisive break above this barrier would help alleviate downside pressure and potentially pave the way for a more sustained recovery.
On the downside, immediate support is seen at the 0.5600 round figure, followed by the 0.5580 area that has recently acted as a floor. A clear move below 0.5580 would likely be interpreted as a fresh bearish signal and could set the stage for a continuation of the established short-term downtrend.
