Key Moments
- Dutch front-month gas futures declined 1.8% to about 84.45 euros per megawatt-hour after touching €86/MWh in the prior session.
- British wholesale gas prices slipped 1.8% to roughly 211.00 pence per therm as Norwegian pipeline flows normalized.
- European Union gas storage stands at 73% capacity, and an upcoming cold spell and transit frictions are limiting further price downside.
Prices Ease From Multi-Year Highs
European and UK wholesale natural gas futures moved lower on Wednesday, stepping back from recent multi-year highs as improved Norwegian pipeline deliveries and balanced intraday demand helped cool the market.
The benchmark Dutch front-month contract was last seen down 1.8% at around 84.45 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh), after having climbed to a peak of €86/MWh in the previous session.
In the UK, the comparable wholesale gas contract also fell 1.8%, trading near 211.00 pence per therm.
Norwegian Pipeline Flows Return to Normal
Norwegian gas exports into Western Europe steadied after Gassco resolved short-term operational problems at key offshore fields. The resumption of normal flows into European import terminals helped ease the immediate supply strain.
With power sector consumption stable and industrial demand holding steady, spot traders reported less intense buying interest than during Tuesday’s rally, which had been fueled by the earlier supply disruption.
Fundamentals Stay Tight Despite Pullback
Market participants highlighted that, even with the intraday pullback, underlying conditions in the European gas market remain constrained heading into winter.
New weather projections point to a pronounced cold spell forecast to move across North-Eastern Europe starting next weekend. Such a development could significantly increase residential heating requirements and power generation needs.
At the same time, underground gas storage sites across the European Union are only 73% full, a level described as well below typical mid-October seasonal norms.
Weather and Logistics Risks Limit Downside
With inventory levels already relatively low and ongoing friction in Middle Eastern transit routes continuing to disrupt global LNG shipping schedules, traders cautioned that a sustained late-October cold period could quickly accelerate storage withdrawals and potentially ignite another upward move along the European gas forward curve.
