Fed Expectations Propel USD/IDR Higher
USD/IDR extended its advance for a fourth consecutive session, with the pair trading near 17,730 during Asian hours on Tuesday. The move reflected renewed strength in the U.S. Dollar as investors increased their expectations for an imminent U.S. Federal Reserve interest rate hike.
Rising energy prices have sharpened inflation worries, adding pressure on the Fed to tighten monetary policy further. Money market pricing on Monday shifted markedly, incorporating more than a 92% likelihood of a rate increase this week, compared with roughly 60% just one week earlier, based on data from the CME FedWatch Tool.
Market Positioning into FOMC Decision
Strategists at Scotiabank noted that the U.S. Dollar is heading into Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) week “on a firm note,” as markets react to the “shift in expectations around the policy decision on Wednesday following last week’s US inflation data.” They pointed out that swaps now “reflect 21bps (or 85%) of tightening risk for Wednesday,” while the latest Bloomberg survey “shows only a very narrow majority of respondents favouring a hold,” highlighting the finely balanced nature of both market and survey-based expectations ahead of the meeting.
Data released on Friday showed that the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose in August, with core inflation posting its strongest increase in four months. At the same time, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield climbed toward 5%, reflecting broader concerns over inflation and fiscal conditions.
Rupiah Pressured by Oil and Inflation Concerns
The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) has come under additional strain as higher oil prices threaten to stoke domestic inflation and weigh on the fiscal outlook for the net oil-importing economy. These inflation risks intensified after August headline inflation picked up to 3.19%, undermining government efforts to contain El Niño-related volatility in food prices.
USD/IDR Technical Picture
On the daily chart, USD/IDR is trading at 17,730 and maintains a broadly neutral short-term bias. The pair is holding above the nine-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA), yet remains constrained below the 50-period EMA, signaling a phase of consolidation rather than a decisive trend. The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) is around 47, below the 50 midline, indicating that upside momentum is still muted even though selling pressure has eased.
| Indicator | Level / Signal | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Price | 17,730 | Neutral stance, within consolidation zone |
| 9-period EMA (support) | Around 17,685 | Break below would expose recent lows and favor sellers |
| 50-period EMA (resistance) | Near 17,797 | Daily close above would signal scope for a stronger recovery |
| 14-day RSI | About 47 | Subdued upside momentum, diminished selling pressure |
On the topside, initial resistance is aligned with the 50-period EMA around 17,797, and a daily close beyond that level would be required to reopen a more pronounced recovery phase. On the downside, immediate support sits at the nine-period EMA near 17,685; a move below this level would bring recent lows back into focus and shift the bias toward the bears.
