Key Moments

  • EUR/CAD trades around 1.6120, marking a second consecutive day of gains amid pressure on the Canadian Dollar from weaker oil prices.
  • Fresh US strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz raise the risk of energy supply disruption and the potential for a rebound in West Texas Intermediate crude.
  • Eurozone inflation above 3% in August strengthens market expectations of a European Central Bank rate hike in September.

EUR/CAD Extends Advance as Oil Weakness Weighs on CAD

EUR/CAD continues to move higher for a second straight session, trading near 1.6120 during European hours on Wednesday. The cross is supported by broad softness in the commodity-linked Canadian Dollar (CAD), which is coming under pressure from declining oil prices.

The recent pullback in crude has undermined the CAD, traditionally sensitive to moves in energy markets. This has given the Euro (EUR) additional support against the Canadian currency, reinforcing the upward trend in EUR/CAD.

Geopolitical Tensions Could Support Oil Prices

Despite current weakness, West Texas Intermediate crude may find support following new United States military strikes on Iranian targets close to the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump said the action was taken in direct response to Tehran’s efforts to deploy sea mines in the key shipping lane and to an earlier attack on an American military base.

The renewed tensions around a critical chokepoint for global energy shipments raise the risk of supply disruptions and could trigger a rebound in oil prices. Any sustained recovery in crude would be an important factor for the Canadian Dollar going forward.

Euro Boosted by Firm Inflation and ECB Expectations

On the European side, the Euro is drawing strength from hotter-than-expected inflation data for August. Eurozone consumer prices have moved above the 3% mark, intensifying market speculation that the European Central Bank will raise interest rates this month.

Commerzbank noted that the latest jump in the inflation rate above 3% is likely to push the ECB toward a rate hike in September. However, the bank also pointed out that underlying indicators signal a broader slowdown in both economic activity and labor market conditions across the region.

Rising Energy Costs Feed ECB Tightening Bets

Analysts at ING highlight that the recent climb in energy prices is exerting a direct influence on policy expectations. They remark that “higher energy prices continue to drag ECB tightening expectations higher, with currently another 80bp of tightening priced by next summer.” According to ING, this repricing suggests investors are anticipating a more prolonged tightening phase by the ECB as energy-related cost pressures persist.
