Key Moments

  • USD/CHF trades just below 0.8750 and is poised for a 0.45% gain for the week.
  • Federal Reserve officials have advocated for additional rate hikes ahead of Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole remarks.
  • Swiss labor market data released on Thursday indicated resilience despite energy and Middle East-related uncertainties.

Dollar-French Pair Stabilizes Ahead of Fed Event

The Swiss Franc (CHF) is trading slightly weaker against a modestly stronger US Dollar (USD) on Friday, with overall market activity muted as investors look ahead to a key speech from Federal Reserve (Fed) Chairman Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole Symposium later in the day. The USD/CHF pair is hovering virtually unchanged just under the 0.8750 level and is on pace for a 0.45% rise over the week.

Participants are focused on potential clues about the Fed’s strategy to address elevated inflation following what was viewed as a disappointing outcome at the most recent policy meeting. That meeting left markets questioning whether the hawkish tone of Warsh’s earlier speeches will be backed by concrete policy signals.

Fed Officials Reinforce Case for Higher Rates

Recent US inflation readings have increased pressure for further interest rate hikes, and several Fed policymakers supported that stance on Thursday, adding to expectations ahead of Warsh’s appearance. Kansas Fed President Jeffrey Schmidt said on CNBC that inflation is “still sticky and we’ve got to continue to find ways to break through” while the Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack reiterated that it is “time to act,” referring to interest rate hikes, which provided a moderate boost to the USD.

Rabobank strategist Bas van Geffen expressed doubts about how much concrete policy direction Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) Chair Warsh will provide at Jackson Hole. Van Geffen questions whether Warsh will adhere closely to prepared remarks or “feel compelled to be a bit more outspoken, after Treasury Secretary Bessent’s interventions in the rates market pushing back against the long end of the Treasury curve.” Rabobank notes that “the lack of a monetary policy panel in this year’s schedule suggests that Warsh will stick with the first option,” reinforcing expectations that clear policy signals may remain limited.

Swiss Franc Shows Limited Reaction to Positive Jobs Data

On the Swiss side, the Franc did not gain notable support from Thursday’s domestic employment figures. The data pointed to a labor market that is holding up well in the face of the energy shock and uncertainty stemming from the Middle East conflict, yet this resilience has not translated into meaningful CHF strength against the broadly firmer USD.
