Euro Strengthens as Eurozone Inflation Data Confirm Acceleration
The Euro (EUR) traded higher against the British Pound (GBP) on Wednesday, with EUR/GBP set for a fifth consecutive daily gain. The pair climbed to session highs near 0.8560, extending its recovery from last week’s low at 0.8530, as investors reacted to final Eurozone inflation figures for July.
The final reading of the Eurozone Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) confirmed earlier estimates, showing that annual headline inflation picked up to 2.9% year-over-year in July from 2.8% in June. Core HICP, which excludes more volatile components, also edged higher to 2.5% year-over-year in July, compared with 2.4% a year earlier.
On a monthly basis, the headline HICP moved back into positive territory, posting a 0.2% increase after a 0.1% decline in June. Core HICP was unchanged on the month for the second consecutive time.
These outcomes reinforced expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) might proceed with another interest rate increase in September. The policy outlook drew further attention after ECB official and Finnish central bank governor Olli Rehn stated earlier on Wednesday that “keeping inflation expectations anchored is essential.”
UK Inflation Rises While Labor Market Signals Mixed
Earlier in the day, UK Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures showed that price growth picked up. Headline inflation rose to 0.3% in July from 0.1% in May and reached 2.9% year-over-year, up from 2.6% in the prior month, aligning with market forecasts.
Core CPI increased at a 2.6% year-over-year pace, unchanged from the previous month and above expectations for a moderation to 2.5%. Despite the firmer inflation data, the impact on the Pound was limited.
The CPI release followed a mixed UK labor market report that had already weighed on the Pound on Monday. The ILO Unemployment Rate was unchanged against projections for a slight decline, employment growth slowed, jobless claims unexpectedly fell, and wage growth accelerated after remaining steady over the prior three months.
