INR Slips Ahead of Key U.S. Labor Report
The Indian Rupee is trading slightly weaker against the U.S. Dollar on Friday as market participants await the release of the United States July Nonfarm Payrolls report, scheduled for 06:00 PM IST, or 12:30 GMT. The USD/INR pair has edged higher toward 95.27, with traders looking to the jobs data for guidance on the underlying strength of the U.S. labor market.
Sentiment before the release is shaped by softer private-sector hiring figures, which have fostered a more cautious stance toward the upcoming official employment numbers.
ADP Weakness Shapes Expectations for NFP
Analysts at TD Securities noted that July ADP employment figures came in below expectations, stating that the data “surprised to the downside, moderating to 44k (TD: 50k, cons: 65k).” The firm emphasized that it does “not put much weight on ADP when it comes to m/m moves in NFP,” but also pointed out that “the trend in the data is in line with what we are expecting.” TD added that “both the monthly and weekly ADP data have moderated this summer after a strong start to the year,” and suggested that “a similar trend is likely to occur with NFP job gains.”
Consensus projections for the Nonfarm Payrolls report indicate that the U.S. economy added 80K jobs, compared with 57K in June. The Unemployment Rate is expected to remain at 4.2%. Average Hourly Earnings, a closely watched gauge of wage inflation, are anticipated to rise 0.3% on a monthly basis and 3.5% year-on-year.
| U.S. Labor Indicators (Estimates) | July | Previous (June) |
|---|---|---|
| Nonfarm Payrolls (change in jobs) | 80K | 57K |
| Unemployment Rate | 4.2% | 4.2% |
| Average Hourly Earnings (m/m) | 0.3% | – |
| Average Hourly Earnings (y/y) | 3.5% | – |
Wage growth is in focus as a key driver of the U.S. Dollar’s next move, potentially overshadowing the headline jobs number. The measure offers insight into the inflation outlook, which policymakers highlighted in the July Federal Reserve policy statement as a lingering concern, with inflation still running well above the 2% objective. In this context, Chairman Kevin Warsh commented that the central bank “won’t hesitate to act” if necessary to contain persistent price pressures.
Market-based expectations, as reflected by the CME FedWatch tool, currently imply a 54.5% probability of an interest rate hike at the Federal Reserve’s September meeting.
Oil Rebounds on Heightened Middle East Tensions
Crude prices have bounced after a sharp retreat over the past two weeks, supported by growing geopolitical risks in the Middle East. Increasing friction between Iran-aligned Houthis and Saudi Arabia has raised the likelihood of internal conflict at a time when Iran and the U.S. have only recently agreed to a temporary ceasefire. This escalation has stoked concerns about a more prolonged disruption to energy supplies.
Citing a report from The Guardian, Saudi Arabia is intensifying its attacks on Houthi targets in response to strikes on Yemeni government forces and the Najran province.
At the time of writing, the MCX crude oil futures contract expiring on August 19 is trading 1.13% higher at approximately Rs. 7,460.
Currencies of major oil-importing economies, including India, generally tend to come under pressure when crude prices rise, as higher energy costs can worsen trade balances and weigh on investor sentiment.
