Management Commentary
BioArctic’s Chief Executive Officer, Gunilla Osswald, highlighted the strategic significance of the transaction, stating: “I’m excited by today’s announcement and proud that a large pharmaceutical company sees potential in our proprietary BrainTransporter technology. Lilly shares our ambition to do more for patients with severe neurological disorders, and this collaboration is a testament to that.”
Growing Partner Network for BrainTransporter
The Eli Lilly agreement marks the fourth partnership BioArctic has established involving its BrainTransporter platform. The company outlined prior arrangements that include:
- A research evaluation agreement with Eisai relating to BAN2802.
- A global license agreement with Bristol Myers Squibb covering BioArctic’s PyroGlutamate-amyloid-beta antibody program.
- An option, collaboration, and license agreement with Novartis.
Despite these arrangements, BioArctic stated that it retains all rights to deploy the BrainTransporter platform outside the scope defined by these four agreements. The company noted that the technology can be applied in multiple therapeutic areas to deliver biologics and other modalities to the brain.
BrainTransporter Platform and Blood-Brain Barrier Targeting
According to BioArctic, the BrainTransporter technology enables drugs to cross into the brain by engaging the transferrin receptor. The company indicated that this approach allows active transport of medicines across the blood-brain barrier, which can provide broader distribution within the brain. BioArctic said this may support enhanced therapeutic efficacy, an improved safety profile, and greater dosing convenience.
Background on Leqembi and Alzheimer’s Program
BioArctic stated that it invented Leqembi (lecanemab), which it describes as the world’s first therapy demonstrated to slow disease progression and reduce cognitive decline in patients with early Alzheimer’s disease. The company noted that Leqembi was developed in partnership with Eisai. Eisai is responsible for regulatory interactions and commercialization worldwide, according to BioArctic.
