  • AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) CEO Lisa Su introduced new Ryzen AI 400 PC chips and MI455 data center AI processors at CES in Las Vegas.
  • Su said AMD is on track to achieve a 1,000-fold increase in AI performance, highlighting the MI500 processor targeted for release in 2027.
  • The announcement followed an NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) CES preview of its Vera Rubin AI platform, underscoring intensifying competition in advanced AI chips.

AMD Expands AI and PC Processor Lineup

AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) CEO Lisa Su used the CES stage in Las Vegas on Monday evening to introduce a new generation of processors for both personal computers and artificial intelligence applications. She stated that the company remained on course to deliver a thousandfold improvement in the AI capabilities of its chips.

Among the new products, Su presented the AMD Ryzen AI 400 series, a fresh lineup of PC processors designed with artificial intelligence features in mind. She also highlighted AMD’s MI455 AI chips, which serve as critical components for data centers that run AI workloads. AMD has an existing agreement with OpenAI to provide such data center processors to the ChatGPT developer.

OpenAI Partnership in the Spotlight

OpenAI President Greg Brockman joined Su on stage to emphasize OpenAI’s technology and its reliance on high-performance processors. His appearance underscored the close collaboration between AMD and OpenAI around data center infrastructure.

The company previously entered into a significant agreement with OpenAI in October. Under that deal, AMD will supply key processors for OpenAI’s data centers, and the arrangement is described as having the potential to generate hundreds of billions in revenue if it is successfully carried out.

MI500 Targets Major Performance Leap

Su also previewed AMD’s forthcoming MI500 processor. She said this product is designed to deliver 1,000 times the performance of an older-generation chip. According to her remarks, AMD plans to bring the MI500 to market in 2027.

Competitive Pressure from Nvidia

AMD’s announcements came only hours after NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang revealed a range of new AI chips at the same CES event. Huang introduced Nvidia’s Vera Rubin AI processor platform, describing it as being in full production and expected to make its debut later in 2026.

Despite benefitting from growing AI-driven demand, AMD has faced challenges keeping pace with Nvidia’s strong position in the highest-end AI chip market. The company has trailed its larger rival in sales of these advanced processors, even as it works to expand its footprint through new products and strategic partnerships.
