Wal-Mart shares close higher on Tuesday, company reported to be nearing bribery allegation settlement with the United States

According to sources with knowledge of the matter, cited by Bloomberg, Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT) is about to pay $300 million in order to settle a bribery probe, involving its employees in China, India and Mexico. The deal was in its final stage, the same media reported. Greg Hitt, a spokesperson for Wal-Mart, refused to comment on the situation.

Wal-Mart shares closed higher on Tuesday, while also marking their sixth gain in the past seven trading sessions. The stock went up 0.79% ($0.60) to $76.72, after touching an intraday high at $77.05, or a price level not seen since May 19th 2015 ($78.36). In the week ended on May 7th the shares of the retail chain added 1.76% to their market value compared to a week ago, which marked a sixth consecutive period of gains. The stock has extended its advance to 2.05% so far during the current month, following a 4.30% surge in April. The latter has been a third straight month of gains. For the entire past year, Wal-Mart shares rose 12.76%.

Last October, the retailer rejected a proposal by US prosecutors to pay $600 million for the settlement of the same bribery probe.

According to the report, as a proposed resolution, a guilty plea by at least one Wal-Mart subsidiary would be required, while the parent company would not suffer charges.

A long-running investigation has been conducted by the Department of Justice in regard to potential misconduct by the retailer in several markets such as Brazil, China, India and Mexico. Wal-Marts compliance system was brought to media attention, after in 2012 the company was reported to have been engaged in a multi-year bribery campaign related to the expansion of its Wal-Mart de Mexico business.

According to CNN Money, the 29 analysts, offering 12-month forecasts regarding Wal-Mart’s stock price, have a median target of $74.00, with a high estimate of $90.00 and a low estimate of $60.00. The median estimate is a 3.55% decrease compared to the closing price of $76.72 on May 9th.

The same media also reported that 19 out of 34 surveyed investment analysts had rated Wal-Mart Stores’ stock as “Hold”, while 11 – as “Buy”. On the other hand, 3 analysts had recommended selling the stock.
