Amazon.com Inc. share price down, rolls out new Kindle devices aimed at vast audiences

Amazon.com Inc. unveiled five new Kindle models aimed at different customers – from children to office employees, in a push to attract more users. The expanding Kindle line-up reflects the efforts of the companys Chief Executive Officer Mr. Jeff Bezos to develop new devices in order to lure media-consuming users.

Amazon, which is primarily focused on online shopping and retail, entered the hardware business seven years ago, when its Kindle device was first released. Large part of its profits from hardware sales are being invested in content, which helps it expand its reach and add new customers to its Prime subscription program.

The company presented its Kindle Voyage device, which costs $199 and is considered as the thinnest e-reader of the company so far. It has a magnesium body, and its display has higher pixel density. Moreover, the display of the Voyage device is 39% brighter than the one of the Paperwhite device, which comes at a price of $100. The texture of the display imitates high-quality paper fiber, which makes it easier for the users eyes to read.

The Kindle Voyage operates under the same software as Amazons Kindle Paperwhite readers and a new $80 touch-screen device, which has a plastic body. The Senior Vice President of Amazon – Mr. David Limp explained that the company expects less people to be interested in the Voyage device in comparison to the ones, who will be attracted by the less-expensive devices.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Mr. Limp said in a statement: “When we show it to customers—the ones who love reading—its difficult to get it out of their hands.”

Amazon also unveiled its new Kindle Fire HD 6 tablet, which was described by the company as the “most powerful tablet under $100”. The device comes at the price of $99 and is aimed at a larger audience than the Voyage device.

The Fire HD 7 tablet, which is available at $140, has a screen resolution of 1 280 x 800 pixels, same as the 6-inch tablet. Both devices are featuring a similar 1.5-gigahertz quad-core processor, have front and rear cameras and graphic processing is now three times faster.

The Vice President of Amazon – Mr. Peter Larsen commented on the Fire HD 6 device in a statement, which was cited by the Wall Street Journal: “If you get down to those low price points, you start to trade stuff off. We hear about it from customers all the time.”

Amazon also presented a $149 Kids Edition and explained that it comes with a two-year replacement plan, a one-year access to the FreeTime service and a rubberized protective case.

In addition, the company is launching new models, which are specifically designed for reading books, as well as the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9, whose price starts at $379. The device comes with an 8.9-inch display and with software, which allows the users to work on office documents. The device is also equipped with a 70% faster graphics processing and Wi-Fi connection, which is considered up to four times faster.

Amazon.com Inc. closed 1.15% lower at $324.00 per share on Wednesday, marking a one-year change of +6.52%. The company is valued at $151.44 billion. According to CNN Money, the 36 analysts offering 12-month price forecasts for Amazon.com Inc. have a median target of $397.50, with a high estimate of $460.00 and a low estimate of $325.00.
